The “Ten Commandments” of the Old Covenant are often seen displayed in our churches and homes. They should be greatly respected, being a major aspect of the foundation of our faith as Bible believers. However, they are part of “the Law”—that system of religious demands Paul later called “the ministry of condemnation” and “the ministry of death” (2 Cor. 3:7-9).
Have you ever noticed that eight out of those Ten Commandments are negative (80%), constraining human behavior by telling us what NOT to do. But the Messiah gave us a new option that is 100% positive.
When asked by a lawyer which commandment was the greatest, He responded:
“YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF. On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets” (Mt. 22:37-40, quoting from Dt. 6:5, Lev. 19:18).
In the parallel passage found in Mark 12:28-34, Jesus offered the astounding conclusion:
“There is no other commandment greater than these!” (Mk. 12:31)
If the Great I AM understood these “TWO COMMANDMENTS OF THE NEW COVENANT” are far superior to all others, isn’t it about time we display them in prominent places so that people will understand where we are in God’s great plan.
When we are truly filled with the love of God, we will automatically keep the other commandments, for “love is the fulfillment of the law” (Ro. 13:10).
SO LET’S START A MOVEMENT TOGETHER—A BIBILCAL LOVE MOVEMENT—LOVING GOD AND LOVING OTHERS, for “love is the more excellent way" (1 Cor. 12:31).
